Simpson Gumpertz and Heger and Cal Poly Pomona Host Symposium on High Performance Building Enclosures-- Practical Sustainability

Two-Day Conference to Explore State-of-the-Art in Enclosure Design

LOS ANGELES - Dec. 15, 2009 -The California Polytechnic State University Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.(SGH) will host a technical symposium entitled "High Performance Building Enclosures-Practical Sustainability" April 30-May 1, 2010. The symposium will provide a forum for industry professionals, academic leaders, and students to discuss the state-of-the-art in sustainable building enclosure design.

SGH and Cal Poly Pomona inaugurated this conference because of the important role building enclosures play in architecture. Building enclosures not only provide occupants shelter from environmental conditions, but also provide aesthetic expression as a prominently visible aspect of architecture.  The symposium will focus on the practical application of sustainability for the built environment through design that respects the cultural and aesthetic context of building enclosures. It is co-chaired by Judson Taylor, SGH Senior Principal, and Judith Sheine, Professor and Chair, Cal Poly Pomona Department of Architecture.

The conference organizers are currently accepting papers on the following topics:

  • Context - Cultural and Aesthetic
  • Design Orientation and Site Dynamics
  • Design - Wall
  • Design - Roof
  • Design Windows
  • Detailing
  • Analysis
  • Case Studies

The conference will be held on the Cal Poly Pomona campus on April 30-May 1, 2010. Additional conference staff includes Will Shepphird, Technical Chair; Juintow Lin, Conference Director; and Alexis Newman, Conference Manager.
