SGH hosts Engineering Day for area students
WALTHAM, Mass. – March 10, 2009 – Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH) today announced it will host sixth-grade students from the Pollard Middle School in Needham, MA for the third Engineering Day at its Waltham headquarters on March 27.Students attending Engineering Day will participate in hands-on activities that demonstrate engineering principles such as tension, compression, heat transfer, and material strength. The sessions are designed to show students how the mathematics and science they are learning in school are applied in the “real world” and encourage the students to consider engineering and science careers.
SGH hosts Engineering Day as part of the company’s participation in the Leadership Initiatives for Teaching and Technology (LIFT2) program, which promotes careers in science, technology, engineering, and math to Massachusetts students. As part of the program SGH also hosts area teachers for seven weeks over the summer, where its staff works closely with the teachers on multiple assignments, including field and laboratory work.
“SGH has always been committed to developing future engineers,” said Glenn Bell, SGH chief executive officer. “Our participation in the LIFT2 program for the past three years demonstrates our commitment to the future of the engineering industry and the importance of science education for society.”
Led by members of SGH’s staff, sessions will include a rope access demonstration on SGH’s training wall; building human “bridges” to illustrate how structures carry tension or compression; a demonstration of fire simulation software to show how engineers plan safer buildings; constructing composite beams intended for flexural loading; testing the student-built beams in SGH’s in-house lab facility; an examination of fractured materials obtained during SGH projects; and measuring heat transfer with an infrared camera. Engineering Day is structured to reinforce concepts learned at previous stations, as well as those learned in the classroom.
