SGH engineer named a 2008 Top 25 Newsmaker by leading trade publication

WALTHAM, Mass. – Jan. 13, 2009 – Engineering News Record Magazine (ENR) has selected John Sumnicht, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) senior principal as a “Top Newsmaker” of 2008 for his structural design work for 185 Berry Street in San Francisco. ENR commended Sumnicht for his unusual solution that added two stories to a building without requiring a seismic retrofit or interrupting the current tenants’ work. Sumnicht’s design focused on constructing the two new stories on seismic isolation bearings over the roof of the existing structure, which had never been performed in the United States. This solution not only made a larger addition possible, with minimal disruption to the occupied building, but improved the performance of the original building.

“SGH is very pleased that ENR recognized the groundbreaking work John and his team performed,” said Glenn Bell, SGH chief executive officer. “It is the type of work John and SGH are known for, and it is an excellent example of applying knowledge and technology to develop new solutions for clients.”

The editors of ENR annually select twenty-five professionals in the engineering and construction industry for the “Top 25 Newsmakers” list, based on their innovations and achievements of the past year.
