SIMPSON GUMPERTZ & HEGER EXPANDS STRUCTURAL MECHANICS SERVICE AND NUCLEAR SITE ENGINEERING CAPABILITIES

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH) announced that it expanded its nuclear structure analysis and design capabilities by adding nine people to its Structural Mechanics division.

In the nuclear field, SGH works with clients such as the United States Department of Energy, Virginia Electric and Power Company, and Washington Group International with facilities that include power plants, processing facilities, and dry and wet storage complexes. The firm' Structural Mechanics offerings include: linear/nonlinear finite element analyses; material characterization; performance evaluation; design enhancement; failure investigation; and safety and reliability analysis. SGH also has extensive experience with nuclear-related codes and standards and understands how to design with the appropriate set of operating and survival design loads, including thermal, seismic, tornado, blast, accidental, soil-structure interaction, and safe shutdown.

"We see great opportunities for our Structural Mechanics work, particularly the nuclear-related projects we’re involved with; and we are looking forward to expanding our client base in that field," said Glenn R. Bell, CEO of SGH. "The team that joins us includes recognized experts in the nuclear facilities industry, and their efforts significantly complement our existing work."

To support its new hires, SGH also announced that it is expanding its presence in the Los Angeles area by opening a new location in Orange County. This new site will be a companion workplace to the company’s downtown Los Angeles location, and it opens August 2008.

"With two work sites in the Los Angeles area, we will provide more effective client service and be better positioned to meet the challenges of recruiting, retention, and commuting in this huge geographic market at a time when finding and keeping highly-qualified staff is at a premium," Bell said.

On a related note, Senior Principal James Parker has relocated from Boston to Los Angeles to lead SGH's expansion plans. He will hold two roles: LA Area Office Head, responsible for managing the operations at both sites; and Head of SGH's Structural Engineering (SE)/LA Division.
