SIMPSON GUMPERTZ & HEGER TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL SGH ENGINEERING DAY
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH) today announced its second annual SGH Engineering Day. On 25 October 2007, SGH will host eleventh and twelfth grade physics students from the Newton-North High School in Newton, MA, for a series of hands-on demonstrations and sessions that highlight various careers and skill-sets in engineering.SGH's Engineering Day demonstrates to students how their math and science studies apply to real-world experiences and careers. Members of SGH's staff will lead six different sessions that cover various engineering-related topics such as tension forces, finite element modeling, and material strength. In addition, staff members will conduct material testing using SGH's in-house lab facility and demonstrate the equipment and skills required to inspect building facades at the firm’s rope access training wall.
SGH's Engineering Day is a result of the company's participation in the Leadership Initiatives for Teaching and Technology (LIFT2), a program that aims to increase the number of Massachusetts students who pursue careers related to science, technology, engineering, and math. As a member of LIFT2, SGH hosted Matt Anderson, a physics teacher from Newton-North High School, for seven weeks over the summer. During this externship, he worked closely with SGH staff on multiple assignments, including field and laboratory work.
"Matt was a great member of our team over the summer, and we are thrilled to have him and his class participate in our Engineering Day," said Glenn R. Bell, CEO, SGH. "It’s critical that students today learn about careers in math, science, and technology disciplines and develop an interest in those areas. We believe that Engineering Day increases student awareness, and we hope that as a result of their visit to our office, some of these students will be future SGH employees."
