"Rebuilding a Historic NYC Townhouse from the Inside Out," by Rebecca A. Melton and Kevin C. Poulin, Structural Engineering & Design, June 2010
Single-family townhouses for sale in the stylish West Village neighborhood of New York City are a rarity, and the townhouse at 112 Washington Place was a special case. During our initial site visit in spring of 2007, it was apparent that the building, built in 1832, had seen little to no maintenance for decades. The four-story, Federal-style townhouse had been solely occupied by an elderly man who led an austere lifestyle, living on the top floor of the structure and surviving without heating, air-conditioning, or hot water. For over four decades, he had lived alone in the building after inheriting the property from his grandmother, who purchased it in 1878.
