Spot Pond Dam
Stoneham, MA
SGH performed an emergency repair for Massachusetts Water Resources Authority of a 48-inch diameter prestressed concrete cylinder pipeline penetrating the concrete core of the Spot Pond Dam. The pipe was cracked at penetration and black corrosion products exuded from the coating cracks which indicated severe corrosion of the pipe. Emergency repairs were required to reduce the immediate risk of pipeline burst, stop leakage during a very short window of pipeline down time. SGH inspected a 20-foot pipe segment where the severe corrosion occurred. We recommended modifications to the bracing system of the new excavation at the gate house and the pipe support system, and the installation of a new pipe deflection monitoring system. The permanent repair was designed with a closure piece that would allow the pipe to move without stressing it.
