Bi-County East & West Water Tunnel

Maryland

This seven-mile-long tunnel supplies water to Montgomery and Prince George Counties in Maryland. During initial acceptance tests, one of the main risers failed. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission retained SGH to review designs proposed by others to repair the failed riser and to review the adequacy of the six other risers connected to the tunnel. Our work included an investigation of the causes for the riser failure, analysis of available geotechnical data (with assistance of consultants), collection and interpretation of new geotechnical data, investigation of as-built conditions of the risers, soil-structure interaction analyses of risers and thrust blocks, thrust block deflection analyses, and development of remedial repair concepts for deficiencies.
