Park Street Station

Boston, MA

As part of a system-wide upgrade for improved handicap accessibility, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) needed to make structural modifications to Park Street Station, the nation's oldest subway station. The plan included removing sixteen columns that were too close to the edges of platforms. Working for the general contractor, Barletta Heavy Division, and in cooperation with the MBTA and its design consultants, SGH developed alternate design solutions that eliminated the need for temporary shoring and multiple load transfers. The alternate design required a single load transfer at each removed column location. The design included new mini-pile foundations, reinforcing of existing columns under full dead load, new steel roof support framing, the methods used for preloading the new supports, and the results of the field instrumentation program used for monitoring jacking and column cutting operations.
