Johns Hopkins Hospital, McElderry Street Garage

Baltimore, MD

SGH was the structural engineer for this 1,200-car, cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete structure, designed to accommodate a seven-story hospital addition above. The garage is built into a hill with three levels below ground. The below-grade portions of the garage are kept open through the use of an areaway created by constructing a permanent tieback wall about ten feet off the face of the garage. Portions of the tieback wall were constructed immediately adjacent to a 100 year old sewer serving the majority of the City of Baltimore. SGH made a structural evaluation of the impact of the garage construction on the sewer and made recommendations for construction, backfilling, and monitoring procedures to minimize the risk of damage to the sewer.
