Central Artery/Tunnel, Vent Building No. 3

Boston, MA

Work on Boston's Central Artery tunnel required 200 foot and 235 foot tower cranes to erect Vent Building No. 3. To safely operate the cranes, concrete mat foundations and anchorages were needed. SGH designed the anchorage for both cranes to the vent building mat foundation. This included verifying that the mat foundation design was capable of safely supporting the crane loads. SGH also designed a temporary mat foundation for the relocation of the 235 foot crane to the grade-level slab of the building. The temporary mat was supported over four columns at each corner. To prevent damage to the slab, a void was formed by placing a four inch sand bed on the existing slab and washing it out after the temporary foundation mat concrete set.
