Grand Central Terminal

New York, NY

Grand Central Terminal, a monumental Beaux-Arts Neo-Classical building, was constructed between 1903 and 1913. The terminal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  As part of a major renovation, SGH investigated roof and skylight leakage and general material degradation. After a thorough investigation, SGH developed plans and specifications for restoration and repair. Included was the restoration of the rooftop stamped copper frieze, which followed the installation of a concealed waterproofing membrane inside the copper enclosure. The batten-seam copper roofing was replaced. Skylight glazing was also replaced to provide impact resistance, condensation control and energy efficiency consistent with current standards. SGH also monitored the repairs and developed quality control inspection procedures.
