Haystack Antenna
Westford, MA
Haystack is a 37-meter steerable radio telescope that was built in the early 1960s and was, at the time, a high-performance antenna. To upgrade this antenna an order of magnitude larger than its initial operational frequency, the accuracy of the antenna had to be increased significantly. SGH conducted a study to determine how to achieve the upgrade effectively and efficiently and without significant modification of the structure of the antenna system. As a part of this upgrade, SGH developed and designed the deformable subreflector, supervised its construction and testing, and participated in placing the system back into successful operation.
