Development of performance-based seismic design initiated in the 1980s as a tool to solve the problem of existing seismically hazardous buildings. With the publication of national rehabilitation guidelines in the late 1990s, and standardization of these guidelines in 2006, the practice of performance-based design has become widely practiced throughout the United States and been implemented in the evaluation and retrofit of thousands of buildings. Today we are on the threshold of a new era of performance-based earthquake engineering technology that will combine advanced structural simulation capability, building information modeling and probabilistic evaluation to enable true performance-based design.
