Abstract: Performance-based design of structures for fire resistance requires the collaboration of fire protection engineers and structural engineers. Fire protection engineers typically analyze fire environments and the transfer of heat from the fire to the elements of a structure. Structural engineers use the results of the heat transfer analysis to determine the structural response, considering thermally induced strains and the effects of changes of material properties at elevated temperatures. Typically this collaboration is most effective when fire resistance is considered as early as the conceptual design stage, when flexibility in structural concepts allows the fire resistance considerations to influence the structural design.
