15 January marks the yearly anniversary of The Great Molasses Flood of 1919. The Boston Globe interviewed SGH’s Ron Mayville for a story they were writing to mark the anniversary. The Boston Globe cover story shares Ron’s current day findings as a structural and metallurgical engineer looking back at this historic failure. Ron discusses how the tanks’ “walls were at least 50 percent too thin, even by the more relaxed standards of the day.” He talks about his use of finite element analysis and how he plans to continue his research to learn even more about what caused this disaster.
