O’Brien and Vong Author Water Vapor Migration Course for Building Design + Construction University

April 21, 2016

Sean O’Brien, Principal, and Matthew Vong, Staff I, authored the article “Water Vapor Migration 101: The Basics of Vapor Retarders” for the Building Design + Construction website and a related BD+C University course. The course, which is available for American Institute of Architects (AIA) continuing education credit, describes how to select vapor retarders to control moisture migration and prevent condensation within the building enclosure.

“Vapor retarders play an important role in controlling water vapor flow and can be a major element in durable building enclosure design,” the authors describe. The course gives an overview of the physical forces that result in water vapor migration, discusses how to select vapor retarder systems based on interior and exterior climate and general building enclosure construction parameters, lists the major factors that impact water vapor migration, and describes ways to design building enclosure systems that manage water vapor.
